OK, let the discussion begin! I will host. I just bought a 20' x 30' tent for the occasion. Last year it was the Saturday before Memorial Day weekend. This year that would be May 17. We could potentially go May 31???

    We need:
    - Somebody to volunteer as Safety officer (control the firing area)
    - A couple people to fire the demo portion
    - Somebody to coordinate the group finale
    - Cleanup
    - Food/beverage (no alcohol)
    - Some kind of contest?

    Thoughts?

Sweet! Either date works for me.

I like firing the demo type stuff, I'll volunteer to do that. I've got a nice torch with the pushbutton on/off thing.

I'll help with cleanup of course, what's the setup for that? Burn pile? Truck load to the dump? Dumpster? Maybe collect a couple dollars from each person to cover disposal costs?

I'll volunteer to bring hotdogs, buns and condiments if someone will have a BBQ there.

    Wahoo!!!!!

I am game for any time in May... I recommend you make this a poll like froadtoad did last time so you can see where the majority wants to go.... I know RPS has some constraints so hopefully he can pick a date that will work for the rest of us too.

I think Cleanup is an assignment for everyone.

I am thinking the 200gm cakeboard contest is a real winner but we can do something else too. I personally want to get another shot at winning as last time a third of my board failed when the lead fuse got wet!!!

Ok..nothing against moodog since he was clever and won fair and square but could we make fireworks fiestas off limits. They always win and we might as well just hand the prize to the guy with most FFs on his board before he shoots it cuz' odds are he will win.

Rod Hash told me if his samples come in in time he will send them with me to demo at the shoot. I know the last demo got many of us interested in Wolverine stuff so I feel pretty good about bringing samples again since I think Rod did get some business out of the last demo.

    Thanks for posting BC!!!

Can I add a poll to this thread? I don't see the option. Or do I have to start a new thread and get this one locked?

I'm game for just about any date, but the 31st allows me to gather a little more spending cash.

I can man the BBQ/bring drinks (Pepsi stuff). Ill try to come up with ideas for a 200g board...I say the limit is 20-200g cakes. Maybe a limit of 2 FF....or none..since link thinks he can't beat them.

The 17th is two days before my college graduation, so I definitely can't make that date. The 31st should work, so I voted for that option...

I agree that cleanup should involve everyone, we got things picked up very quickly last time with everyone helping. I am happy to help coordinate the group finale as long as somebody else lights it, Switch and I lit last time, I'd like to see it and enjoy it this time! I could possibly do safety if nobody else volunteers.

I wouldn't mind lighting the finale...just need to get some safety gear..working on it.

Clean up allows time for the cops to leave...lol...everyone should jump in and help.

    Thanks to our generous host!!!

I had to vote for the 17th as the niece's birthday party will be the 31st and I think my wife would kill me if i bagged it for fireworks. Its not set in stone but for now that has to be my vote.

I am down to help where needed although i dont think i know enough about safety to be effective. I will be there for cleanup- the more people, the quicker it will go. I can bring more food. I'll put some thought into that one.

As far as the competition, since we did 20 200gm cakes in Sept, should we mix it up and do something like 10 200gm and 5 500gm cakes? Just thinking out loud. Or we could do boards of like 30 FF's and tie Link down with duct tape, pry his lids open (ala Clockwork Orange) and make him face his fears....

I don't know what Link's talking about, he's got me picking up a case of FF's for him.

That's cool about the Wolverine product to demo, I always enjoy watching that product, and I'm planning to get more of it this year, so that will be a good opportunity for me to pick some more nice product.

    Big Mouth!!!

Actually those are part of my fourth show. I plan to do an entire case of FFs on a board. That should be awesome.

I was just whining... FFs are fine... I will not use them on my board however.... That would be unoriginal now since someone else has already whup'ed us with them.

So why is the 24th not on the table? This could maybe get Moodog (the tormentor), tjfireworks, and RPS on board.

OK... we also can either e-fire, do a single match show or maybe a combo of these two. Due to the difficulty with timing doing single match shows, I am personally planning on doing a single match serial show with parallel stations that are efired for my 4th of July show. This makes setup so much faster. I really don't want anyone hand lighting if possible. They don't get to see the show and they are at greater risk.

IMHO I think we should try to find a way to make sure everyone can set down and enjoy the show at a safe distance.

Hehe, I figured you were using them for something else. I was thinking of doing a board of them for the 4th too. Should be pretty nice, especially for the price. If I do the competition I'll probably try to do something very different as well.

I like moo's idea of doing a board with a couple 500's and 200's. Be ncie to be able to get a couple different heights in there. Maybe even allow a certain number of shells. Or make equivalents and allow up to 6 units, 1 unit = 3 200g's, or 1 500g, or 6 shells. Something like that. I just like being able to do multiheight effects to fill the sky. Whatever everyone wants to do is cool though.

I think we need to make certain that at least one event is as affordable as possible.

You want some height throw some Wolverine Golden Willows on your board.

Perhaps we could have two categories. A 200gm only competiton and then a mega-cake board competition.

On the mega-board competition lets not limit what can go on the board but rather define a board size and then make the competition judged on the following criteria:

    1) the density of the board. Which means the persons having the most surface area covered with pyro scores high in this category...
    2) Overall timing and performance.
    3) There could be a predetermined duration for the board to run and then the closer you come to hitting that time the better you score. For example, let's say the time is five minutes. Any run time less than 4 minutes gets one star. between 4 to 4.25 minutes is two stars. 4.25 to 4.5 minutes is three stars. 4.5 to 4.75 minutes is four stars. 4.75 min to 5 min is five stars. The person coming closest to five minutes gets a bonus star. If you exceed the run time by 15 seconds you lose one star and then continue to lose a star for every extra 15 seconds of run time.

To win the mega-board competition you would have the highest cumulative score. Each of the three categories could have a total of five stars awarded with one bonus star possible on the duration category. A perfect score is 16 stars.

I suggest the total size of the mega board be restricted to a 4'X4' sheet of plywood. All pyro must be securely mounted within the perimeter of the board. You may not stack pyro on pyro.. all devices must be in firm contact with the board. You will want to think carefully about where you put the effects and their firing order to avoid collisions of the effects.

So we can do the good ole' 20 200gm cake board competition and the mega-board competition too. You can participate in both or just one.

We can work out who the judges will be but I think we should have three judges. Your score will be an average of the three judges scores for any category or sub-category...

Just realized I had mistyped in my last post, I meant 6 units (not 86) for the choose your own type of product board I was proposing. So, you could have like 18 200g, or 6 500g, or 36 shells, or some combination of that. So basically smaller then the 200g board, but a bit more room to work with.

Like I said, whatever everyone else wants to do is cool with me though. I don't know if I'm going to compete, if I do I want to be able to fuse everything up at home, but right now I don't have a vehicle large enough to transport a fused board. If that's still the case then, I'll just bring product for the main shoot.

Is it Kosher with DOT to move a fused up board or a fused up rack? Seuss- If its cool, I can pick your board up for you in my rig if it'll fit. I think I can fit up to a 4x6 board in the rig. I'm goign to assemble mine on site.

Link, I appreciate your detailed approach to judging the board competition. I'm not bashing your idea, I'm just coming from a different angle for a minute here. IMHO- If it were me, I'd suggest having the PU members in attendance vote by writing their choice for first and second place and place the paper in a hat and then tally the votes. That way, there's no math involved- its just an individual feeling for a show or not. And, its your peers judging your work. 1st place gets bragging rights. Second place gets high fives. Or whatever the group wants. Just spit-balling here. Maybe Steve wants to judge as its his party?

The weekend of the 24th is Memorial day weekend. I'd bet most will have family outings and obligations that weekend. But then again, maybe not....

The short answer is no. You should not transport pre-fused racks or boards.

Hey I don't really care.... I don't even really care who ultimately wins (well sorta don't care.. alright... I lied.. I do care) as long as my board performs well and I enjoy the event. The competition is just to make it more fun. Yeah... your idea or seuss' would work great.

I still think the 200gm board limit is best because it allows for the most creativity and variety at the lowest total cost. There are some 200gm cakes that can get some nice height and I thought the 200gm board was a chance to demonstrate what you can do with lower end products. Most of us can spare the change for a 200gm board. If you are not buying wholesale, those 500gm cakes can really blow the budget. Steve's stand has nice pricing in general but you can put together a nice 200gm board buying off the shelf and still not necessaruily empty your wallet. At least one competition should be reasonably affordable.

We have plenty of time to hash this out.

Yeah, you're right, I was about to go to sleep when I posted that last night. I was just thinking about not wanting to have to be up there super early to put together the board and all. But yeah, that's not really going to work. Eh, now I gotta think about it some more.

What about a gram limit competion? You get 3000 grams of comp (or whatever the number) to put on your board. Any product goes. We could assign a weight to things like candles, ball shells, mines, canister shells, fountains, etc.

Thats good! So is one of the criteria going to be duration or just perfromance?

I think your suggestion allows for a lot of creativity and the extra 1000gms of comp let's you have a nice balance of 200gm+ to 500gm cakes. I like the idea of using tubes and candles.

3000g is only equivalent to 15 200g cakes, but it still might be workable depending upon how you value other items. It will always be somewhat arbitrary, but you would have to come up with some values to keep it balanced for everyone. For example:
    Candles - 25g each
    Small Fountain - 50g each

Yeah... for some reason I was thinking 5000gms (my eyes are getting worse each year) ...I think 3000gms is too light. I rather liked the 5000gm idea (which apparently was only in my head) because it allowed for a better range of items. But 3000gms certanly keeps it affordable.....
