4" shell vs. 3/4" plywood

How true....The exploding Chicken did not have the impact that the hole through the plywood had on me. Gives you a new respect for even the 3" NOAB's us 1.4 g guys are limited to.

Please keep all body parts away from the top of loaded guns.....even 1.75 guns

Interesting imagery. There's real power in these shells we play with for sure.

HOWEVER

I'm skeptical of the guy's claim that he saw a "star" go through 3/4" plywood, through a filled sandbox "bouncing off of tubes" and out the other side through another pc of 3/4" ply. We used to shoot 7.64 rounds through a homemade sandbox back in the day ('bout 2 foot thick) and I can't recall ever seeing an "exit wound". Not likely that a star with a much smaller mass-velocity could pull it off, at least without shattering.

I certainly think that live fire demos like this can be educational. But it feels unnecessary to embellish the already vivid lesson with unsubstantiated and possibly exaggerated rumors. Stick to the facts and everyone learns the most.

OR the guy actually saw this and I've been shooting the wrong shells for sure!

Since that guy was continuing with a story he told us in the class room concerning a catastrophic failure where they were running for there lives... I'm not sure how he could determine what caused the holes he described.

There is a video floating around out there where they have 1.3 guns mounted side ways on a semi trailer and have them pointed point blank at the side of a shipping container. Well maybe 3 feet from the side of the shipping container. And with a high speed camera they proceed to fire at the side of the steel shipping container with a 3", a 4", a 5", a 6", an 8", a 10" and a 12" shell. I think its the 10" that finally punches a hole through the side of the container.

That was an awesome video. It was a 12" shell that one time nearly destroyed the cargo container, the other time it made a 12" dent and a smaller hole. But that was a fired directly at the container at point blank range, not a shell that came back down or blew up in the tube. They seem to conclude that a cargo container makes a reasonably safe place for people during a barge shoot, which seems appropriate to me.

The 3" shell bounces off with little damage even when directly fired at it from a few feet, whereas a 3 or 4" shell will go through plywood when shot point blank. So if I do a barge show, I will make sure that I have a container to hunker down in during the show. Better yet, I shoot it remotely via a long range wireless system.

THAT was COOL!

It looks like the first 12" shot that blew through the container was helped an awful lot by the previous shots. Connections at the top of the container (where the corrugated side panel meets the roof) were probably weakened substantially by the deformations as a result of the previous blows. I'm surprised that the container did as well as it did.

And although I would guess that it would be able to hold back MOST 12" shells in a single malfunction, I wouldn't want to be inside to find out! Better in there than over the side of the barge, though...

Not even 1 in 50 shows would be shot without a person on the barge. I mean who is gonna put out a fire. Cakes burn, tubes burn, racks burn. IF you have metal racks, and no match on shells it would be OK.

Containers are not easy to get on and off barges.

Most shooters have plywood shelters/cubby's for smaller shoots. Weather proof varies with design as does windows and head room.

Risk assessment would conclude ply covered with metal should suffice.

This is a show in which a 12" blew up in the mortar on a barge show. It not only knocked over mortars, the 12 shell bent the deck of the barge (1/4 inch steel) like it was paper.

I wanna see a blind shell drop test on a hard hat.

That is more relevant cause most pyros stand outside the shelter, shootin shack or container to sneek a peek at the shoot.

How many shelters have windows-only ever seen a couple.
