    Default Best Hot Glue Gun???

I am looking for a good hot glue gun but don't really have any experience with them.

Anyone have any recommendations on brand or size???

Also what kind of glue should I use?

I want to use it mainly on firework related tasks, such as securing cakes and tubes to boards.

Thanks guys I can use all the help I can get.

You are looking for speed. I bought one of those $6.00 ones from Home Depot and it works, but if you are putting a lot of glue though it, it is too slow. You gotta wait for the glue stick to melt.

You can spend ten bucks or 1000 plus on a glue gun or system. It all depends upon your needs. I have one where you dump chips into a hopper, granted they are not cheap but you can pump out gallons of glue per hour. My everyday one is a 3M Scotch-Weld AE II Hot Melt Applicator. They run about 70 bucks and have some nice features. The ones Dewey pointed out are very nice too.

    buy two cheap ones...

a glue gun is a glue gun is a glue gun. yes there are little bells and whistles some of the more expensive ones have, but no matter how good the gun is, if you are using lots of glue at once (like building cakes out of tubes) you will run out of melted glue in the reservoir and forcing unmelted glue through the gun results in back flow and one hell of a mess.

as soon as glue gun #1 slows down, switch to gun #2.

for the price of some fancy schmancy gun you can have two cheapies and a bunch of glue sticks.

But the question that was asked whats the best hot glue gun?
Not one that if laid on its side will short out and spark.
Yes it has happened to myself.

Buy a decent gun first time around and your set to go.

Although you can work around some of those annoyances, is it really worth it? Some glue guns have been known to short out like you said. Would I want to be using one of those around live material? I think not.
In fact it is recommended that you unplug the gun when doing so and keep it away when plugged in.
Or how about how the cheaper ones keep oozing glue. Yeah you could put it over something disposable, but that gets to be a pain too. And the cheap ones have small heat sinks. All you get is a few squirts and then you have to wait, or switch guns.

    KMF,

I guess I am dumb, but we use a silicone base adhesive. Works great and is extremely cheap. The best part is that cakes can be removed from the board with relatively little mess!

Is there a particular reason to use hot glue? Let me know if I am missing something.

    MO,

Yes, I also use silicone to glue cakes down to my boards.

I am going to be using the hot glue for rebuilding cakes that I have broken down to use individual rows or certain effects.

Speed...hot glue is solid in seconds where Silicone based adhesives can take 24+ hours to cure.

I know there has been this type of discussion in the past, but is it better to just go with liquid nails? Also, is there a specific type of LN for bonding paperboard cakes to plywood/pressed wood? I'm open to silicone based adhesives, too.

IMO silicone is way better than liquid nails because you can kick off the cakes scrap the old silicone off and reuse your boards time and time again. Liquid nails is a PITA to scrap and save you boards.

If you going to reuse you boards Silicone all the way

I find the cheaper the better. Wal-Mart usually has the cheapest price around. I try to stay clear of anything that says adhesive on the tube.

Here is what works well for me

i also prefer the silicone product over some of the adhesives like PowerGrab. IMO, some of the adhesives have too much water content and can soften the bases of cakes when gluing them on the Board. I've tried several hot glue guns and none of them gave me sufficient supply of hot glue to adequately affix the cake to the board. Maybe if I bought one of those $100 hot glue guns that were on the website that would have made a difference. The silicone products are easy to apply from a caulking tube and I can lay down alot of adhesive in a short period of time. Since it takes several days to glue and fuse boards, the 24 hour cure time is not much of a inconvenience. The silicone does clean off the board easily when the show is done, too.
If everything seems to be going well, you have obviously overlooked something.

Yet another alternative. If I remember correctly. Liquid Nails dries in a day two when applied to paper, as does Elmer's glue, which won't melt under heat, which is my main peeve with hot glue.

Thank you, KMF. I noticed the picture of the silicone product that you suggested is a sealant. I wasn't aware that sealants can also be a successful bonding agent in cake boards, especially angle boards. I trust that it has worked for you and I will look into that. I love the idea of re-using wood!

Anything that doesn't say adhesive on it seems to work better for me because it is easier to scrap off you boards.

One other tip i can give you is

Just put a few dabs of the silicone under the cake then push down and wiggle it back and forth a little to smash down the glue. Then run a bead around the entire base of the cake and smear with you finger to insure that the silicone gets both on the side of the cake and the board. Let dry and they will be plenty secure for transport and shooting.

Silicone sealant is incredibly tough. Try removing a sink that was installed with it. You need a windshield cutter to get through it.

Not the stuff I linked from Walmart. I have used it for the past three years and it works great. Thats also why I said the cheaper the better, you get what you pay for. There is a big difference in silicone or any caulk for that matter.

Got my hot glue gun in the mail today!

I ended up buying a Surebonder Pro2-100 gun.

I have only had the chance to use it once. I will report back on what I think of it after i get the chance to use a while. I like everything about it so far. I have a few pyro projects already planned.
