Am taking high speed video of cracker exploding

I work as a mechanical engineer for a cryogenic company. A lot of our equipment moves so fast, that we MUST employ an industrial high speed camera to analyze performance. This is an Olympus I speed industrial camera. Its worth 40 grand.

Anyways, I wanted to get a video of some black cats going off. I this would be really interesting to all of us pyro's. The camera can take footage at a rate of 60 frames per second all the way to 44,000 frames per second. The quality above 1,000 fps begins to degrade in order for the camera to be able to store the higher volume of data.

I would like to take the video at 1000 fps, so I can keep the best resolution, but I don't know how quickly crackers fragment. Would a higher frame rate be needed? I figure this will be a cool video to show you guys when I am done.

Looks to me like at least 10,000 fps would be best.

Probably would have to tape them down to keep them in frame---one pops and usually sends the pack flying around a little.

I would imagine that 20,000fps would be slow enough to see the paper inflate and burst with fire behind it. -hint hint-

I was playing around with the camera today. Looks like 5-6 thousand fps would be the best range. Anything after that causes the quality to degrade too far the way the camera software is set up.

Finally got around to this ... had to wait for no one to be at work for obvious reasons. I took two films. One at 2,000 fps and the other at 4,000 fps. This video shows the clip at several play back rates. I may try a higher rate of capture if I get some free time.

Yeah, I only rarely take this camera from work (costs $40,000). So I am limited to what i can do inside without the neighbors calling the cops. Haha but I will try to get some cooler shots. This was my first stab at it.

yeah i was kinda kidding about the shell, i know you said that camera was expensive so i'd be worried that the shell would somehow damage the lens or something...

if you could get a vid of a jumping jack, or a ground spinner functioning that would be cool...in fact, i'd like to see one of those buzzballs/zips/etc...going off.

I am willing to take some requests. It may take me a month or so to get to the video, but I enjoy this stuff so it isn't a problem. As long as it is something I can do without making much noise outside of our factory facility, I am fine with doing it. I will be able to get some stuff at phantom or skyking in 3 weeks, so I can pick requested things up then.

buzzballs (and the like) are basicly ground spinners on steroids. they look like a traditional ground spinner but they take off into the air. the part i would love to see is the inital takeoff and how it starts to spin, then stabelize, then take off.

would be a neat effect to see in slo-mo.
