Taking apart a cake no longer makes it a 1.4 item, but doing so on your own property, who cares.
Taking cakes apart is not all that hard, but you need some skill as to what to do with the tubes later.
Naw stang, its not safe. As soon as you modify that 1.4 cake it becomes IED

I have done this before, it can be a headache and I would not recommend it for someone that does not have much pyro experiance. It can be very dangerous altering cakes in this manner. The internal fusing can be very unpredicatable, and could be unsafe for yourself and your audience.
If you don't have a boatload of prior experience doing so I would not chance altering a cake. It's to unpredictable when dealing with internal fusing. Please don't become one of the anti-pyro lobby statistics we read about.
