Thread: Can snaps ignite fireworks?

    Default Can snaps ignite fireworks?

    I had a box of random fireworks(small fountains and such) and a small pack of snaps got loose inside the box with out me knowing. So walking along with the box all of a sudden I hear pop pop pop as things shifted and crunched em.
    Of course I cleaned all the snaps out of the box right away but it got me thinking. Could a snap mashed againist a fuse cause ignition?
    I thinking its 1 in 1000 chance but I'm curious as to others thoughts.

    I would sure think not. being that you can legally ship them, they must not be an issue.

    Ever try to light visco with a lit ciggerette? Takes a while, I'd think a snap pop has no chance.

    If you dig deep into the past on PU you should find a threat on an accident that happened out in WA (I think). Some kids threw some black eyed peas into some rockets and they started up. It might take some digging, I might have some details wrong, and these were black eyed peas and not snaps.
    I may not have gone where I intended to go, but I think I have ended up where I needed to be.

    Now black eye peas are a different story, those throw some major sparks. I could see those lighting some loose powder.

    Then again, maybe a rouge snappop, if it snapped on some spilled lift charge, could then light more.


    I guess that settles it. Snap Pops are the most dangrous thing made. Someone should call the CPSC right away and warn them.

    If i were you man, i would definatly keep snaps away from other fireworks, even though it has a low probability to ignite fireworks...i would be on the safe side....because when you pop those snaps they sound like an e-match going off....you never know man...you never know...

    better safe than sorry right?

    About 20 years ago the original Moapa Indian Reservation fireworks shop in Nevada was burned out when the clerk, who was tossing snaps inside the store, set off the whole inventory. At that time, the store was just a large trailer. It was several years before they got the operation running again.

    He speaks the truth! I was personally there when that whole incident happened. There is a big group of stands in the area (Boom City). Some kids threw a Black Eyed Pea into a stand and it started some rockets and crackers. Scary is only the beginning of the story.

    I would agree though that a regular snap probably couldn't. That's not to say it CAN'T...but highly unlikely I think.

    When a snap goes off, the paper gets burned slightly. And there is smoke and light, indicating some amount of combustion. So I'd imagine that could potentially light a fuse or set off any sort of pyrotechnic powders. Potentially.

    Would I let some kids throw snaps near my pre-staged finale rack? No way!

    Would I rely on snaps to light said finale rack at 10:35pm on the 4th? No, of course not.

    Would I try to light my charcoal grill with snaps? Hmmmm...that might be entertaining.

    Who wants to make a batch of flash powder and test if a snap will set it off? Not IT!!!!!

    Lets just say there is a certain snap out there that will remain unnamed that uses the same silver fulminate coated sand to initiate a quantity of armstrongs

    Well, throw some snaps in the dark and what do you see? I see an ignition source.

    Chances of it lighting unprimed visco I would say low.

    Primed visco greater risk.

    The hard part is getting the snap to ignite without blowing off or burning something you want to keep.
