  2. Man vs. Machine

    The photos below where from an independent factory visited earlier in the week ... my reason for showing them is to illustrate the fact that even in China, machines are taking over production in almost every aspect. The reasoning is obvious ... a machine can do more than a human in terms of repetitive tasks. Add the fact that labor costs are rising in China and skilled laborers are fleeing the fireworks business for higher paying jobs in other industries ... but you still have the demand for inexpensive ...
  3. Creme of the crop ...

    OK, I know some of you are going to be jealous ... and rightfully so! Today I flew from Changsha to Nanning, drove to Qinzhou and had the opportunity to tour the factory and demo the products of the illustrious Yung-Feng Fireworks! (Which is apparently pronounced more like "Yoong-Foong" than "Young-Feng" ... I'm trying to be respectful and get pronunciations correct.)

    The first and most noticeable aspect of Yung-Feng's factory are these skinny 50 foot high eucalyptus ...
  4. Where the streets have no name (or at least not one I can pronounce) ...

    My first full day in Liuyang was fairly uneventful. The factories weren’t quite ready for me so I essentially took the day to recuperate from all the traveling, catch up on emails and basically soak in my surroundings.

    Usually when you hear about Liuyang (or China in general) you see a picture of a factory or maybe some fireworks in the sky, but it’s rare that you ever get a glimpse of day-to-day life on the streets, which is totally fascinating in and of itself. Simply being here ...

  5. Leaving on a jet plane ...



    My flight actually left Dulles Airport at 12:30 PM on Wednesday the 25th ... funny thing is, after flying for only 14 hours, I landed in Beijing at approximately 2:30 PM on Thursday the 26th! It feels like you get beamed into the future by a day!

    I had hoped to take some photos while in transit, but if you've ever been crammed into a plane or stuck in an airport … that pretty much sums up my whole experience. ...
