I have had experience with two 500g fountains. Out of sheer curiosity, I purchased and tried the Brothers Stompin' Show as well as the Phantom Grucci New York Harbor. I'm not totally convinced that the New York Harbor is a 500g although it was at one time listed as such. The Stompin' Show was nice but not as long as I would have hoped for the price. The New York Harbor was fairly long with lots of unique effects (3minutes&55 seconds).

My overall view of 500g fountains is that for less money, one can create a more dazzling show with regular sized 200g fountains fused with green or rapid yellow visco fuse. A group or combination of carefully chosen barrage fountains such as the Phantom Power Surge or Black Cat Pop Goes the Fountain leading into - or combined with - such items as the Glorious Superb or even some of the higher quality - high firing - cones can create effects that will saturate normal sized backyard. Effects that will rival if not exceed what I have experienced with 500g.

Adding a group of simultaneously fired 48 Color Pearl Flower repeaters along with the - best of the best - 200g Barrage Fountains (Glorious Superb..Power Surge..Pop Goes the Fountain..Rat-a-Tat-Tat...as well as Silvery Cones, etc.) fired closely or in unison; can create a work of art that no 500g fountain (at any price) will match.

I would agree.

Unless the 500 gram fountain has some very special effect or goes really high, I think it is better to make your own "high gram" fountain by fusing small and cheaper fountains together. You also have the choice of what you want to put on it.

Bobby already mentioned some of my favorite fountains. Mix in some Color Pearls or some Twitter Glitter fountains for some added height. Tall cones are good as well. For some add spice, throw on some small mines such as Jack mines, Cyber Mines or Black Cat Ground Pounders.

All that it takes is three 200 gram fountains and you have already exceeded the composition of a 500 gram fountain.

One other point. If you put your fountains on a 3'-8' board, it will have more spread than any 500 gram fountain. 500 gram fountains can only be so big because they have to sit on a shelf, sold and transported.

Here are some pictures of my fountain boards.

and if you want to get fancy you can put them on a wheel powered by jumbo ground blooms and you will get a lot of spread.

Some of the fan shaped 500 gram fountains are nice. It is harder to make your own fan shaped fountains. I liked the Awesome fountain by Glorious. It is really a 320 gram fountain that lasts 74 seconds. It has red, silver mums with orange purple stars. Snow flowers; red, green & yellow stars. Large crackling with lemon yellow & blue stars; Yellow flowers with green and purple stars. Purple showers; large crackling with with red, green and blue stars. It has no whistles.

You can build your own fan shaped fountain holder as shown here:

I have had several 500gm fountains that I thought were pretty good; Stompin' Show, Great Wall, Gold Panner, Traffic Jam, Kango Hop (was told it was 500gm, not 100% sure) all of these are Brothers products. Gold Panner and Traffic Jam are the larger and most expensive of these but the higher price didn't make them any better. For the price I would buy the others. I have also had Nocturnal Vision, Mt. Everst and Space Bastion all made by Cannon Brand. Nocturnal and Everst were rubbish. I have had lots of stuff a 1/4 the price that out performed these two. But, Space Bastion was a very good fountain and it had a long duration. I have noticed that the smaller ones lasted about as long as the larger ones. The large ones may have more tubes going off at one time though. In my opion if you can get them at a good wholesale price it might be ok but I would never pay retail for them. If you do you will not be too happy.
Now with all that being said, I would have to agree with the others when they say you would be better off fusing smaller fountains together. It may cost a little less and in doing this there is no limit to the size. You can also get a better mix and spread out of this technique.
I know most people aren't big fans of fountains but their are some good ones out there and if you set off a big bunch of them at the same time there is no way to not like them.

You can also fuse a bunch of them on a pole. Like this:

Those are at the top of an eight foot pole. Black Cat was selling FOS (Fountain On a Stick) that you could have paid a lot of money for. And the stick was not even close to 8'.

Also notice the wheel. You can make a high quality wheel that outperforms anything you can buy. It is also powered by ground blooms. This one does not have 500 grams on it, but I did make some this year, using the same wheel, that did. They performed marvelously.

Finally they make great excerise toys for your pets.

I would like to see you that with a 500 gram fountain. :)
