View Full Version : how to best use 100 hdpe tubes?

ok so i've got 100 15 inch HDPE tubes and i'm wantign to save on the doans pills.

here's the situation.

i've got 75 of them in a big box 5x15, and 5 5 shot boxes that i can angle around. using re-bar and eye hooks.

the 5 5 shots are nice, but that 75 shot box is insanely heavy. i built it for use in finales but just looking at it is a finale for my back.

so i got to thinkin... (dangerous i know)

what will be the best way to use up thoes 100 tubes without having to order more and not have some odd ones left over.

the best thing i have figured out so far is 3 30 shot 6x5 fans and keep 10 of them in 2 5 shot boxes that i already have made.

i like the idea of having things in multiples of 6 (to match shell kit cases which usually come in multiples of 6) but doing this leaves me with thoes 10 extra.

having 4 24 shot boxes would then leave me with 4 extra...and i'm not gonna build a 4 shot rack.

so anyone have any pearls of wisdom for me?

I sympathise with your sorrow at the weight of that 75 shot rack so much I'm willing to take it off your hands for free (with tubes of course)

Well I'd actually build 20 5 shot racks that you could screw together in any configuration you'd want. ver lightweight to haul around and easy to slap together wth others to make as many shots as you wanted, and cold fan the by angling as well

st1, i'm not sure this is wisdom, but if that was my situation, I would be trying to do the 24 shot racks, and asking you guys if I could cut the 10 15" tubes in half, to make a 20 mine rack!!!, which from what I have found is very possable, have found 2 people making mine racks with 6" tubes, would just have to plug 10 of the ones I would cut in half!!!!!................

i like that idea, but then there's that problem of having things in multiples of 6...if only i had ordered 120 instead of 100 :D

i like the multiple/modular idea because sometimes i'll want them all in one spot, other times i'll want to spread the racks out a bit...

so i'll definatley be going with that concept.

that idea of 3 30 shot 6 point fans is sounding better and better.

I tried suggesting things like that before and people thought I was on crack... I guess they love lugging around huge ace racks

well as far as the big racks go i only built it that way in the first place to conserve on wood and space. now i'm not so concerned. if you have the help it's not a big deal, but when you are alone, moving into your new apartment, and you need to get that rack from the front of the apartment to the back of the closet in the back bedroom...

yeah...screw that...never again

time to build something more reasonable. it took me a good 10 minutes of rocking that thing back and forth to "walk" it into the back room leaving torn up carpet and splinters all over the place.

never again.

I remember that post matt.
I to will be making racks very soon and need to figure out what I want to do. I figure basic racks, 24 shot and some 6 shot fan racks will do.

Comes down to how you do each show... we usually have 2-3 if not more launch points in the field, never the same configuration, if I had all my tubes in 1 or 2 racks, it really limits how you can do your show.

If I only had 100 tubes, I think I would build 10 shot strait racks so that you can do fans, strait, whatever. Screw plywood to the ends to hold them upright, and then they tear down and store easily.

I'm with noel. Make 10 shot racks and screw them together in the configuration you want if you only have 100 mortars to work with.

That's what we did with 250 mortars. Made 25-10 shot modules to arrange any way we wanted to with end boards and could change it up any time we got ready. I know it is against the "multiples of 6" thing, but we did it anyway. I don't mind having left over shells.

I built a 28 shot (7 rows x 4 deep) fanned mine rack with the leftovers and I think we still have 2 or 3 mortars lying around somewhere. We started with 280 this go-round.

My daughter hauls around 10 shot racks when she's shooting. She's almost 11 so I'd say they are easy on the back. Now I just need to convince her that moving the 6" racks are just as easy. Maybe she does need a horse

ST1DINOH...

4 words " 2LITER SODA CARRIERS " they are made of HDPE and will hold 24 HDPE SRD-11 tubes perfectly... I use some 1" dowels to tighten them up... but they work freaking great... I have several of them for finale boxes... your could use Milk crates as well... As regards to fan racks... I build almost all my racks in single rows so I can angle them with 2X4's at the bottom and top to hold the angles I want...

Straight racks of 6's or 10's

then you can arrange as needed in fans or otherwise.

10s means less building ;)

I just got 120 tubes in (100 12" and 20 15")...
I'm gonna be making my first racks soon - very psyched.
What I'm planning:

60-shot finale fan rack (6 rows of 10) - I know it'll be heavy, but I'm young-ish and I can handle carrying around 80-or-so lbs from time to time.

2x 20-shot straight racks

20-shot fan rack (4 rows of 5)

:D :D :D

wow...i'm torn

i'm glad everyone has chimed in here.

i was leaning twords 4 24 shots in a 6 way fan...then having 4 left over kinda as spares.

but now that noel and some others have suggested the 10 shot moduels i've been forced to reconsider everything.

then in comes johnny with the suggestion of the 2 liter soda crates, and that would eliminate all my rack building woes...

hmmmmm

ST1, take a look at these racks I built, they hardly weight anything at all and are great for finales:D Hope this hurts... I mean helps:lol:

Last year I just used Milkcrate racks! Great way to puke the sky for a finale Plus NO Building! I plan on being a bit more ambitious this year!

i'm trying to lighten the load not increase it

thats kinda where i'm at...i'd like to go with the milk crates...but at the same time i'd rather have the ability to angle them or build them into a angle rack

How about a separate, liteweight, angle ramp to bungie under the milk crate rack. One to the right and one to the left. "PH"

Check out "El cheapo 30-shot festival ball rack"

Fast way to make an angled milk crate rack and you don't need to carry a ramp.

Does anyone have a pic or link of a milk crate rack, especially the angled style. Guess i am lazy and don't want to build one as bad as I thought! :D .
Joyce
PS - i have seen them in other posts, but can't remember where.

Dont be lazy, just get the hard work over with now and enjoy 24 shot racks that will last you a long time and wont be as dangerous as milk crate racks.
