I assume that to do something like this you need the same type of setup and a computer to turn the switches on and off. This may belong under OFf topic, but its amazing none the less.

I'm amazed at how quickly that video has gotten around. I saw it a few days ago on some theatrical lighting forums... one of the members over there discovered that they were using this off-the-shelf product to control the display. http://www.animatedlighting.com/products/christmaskit.asp

I saw that a few days ago, and being a theatre tech, it made me smile = )
My guess would be all the lights are run to dimmers and controlled via a DMX board or dongle and a PC.
There are various dongles (Printer port to USB adaptors [also ecodes and decodes the DMX signal]) available for purchase, or schematics for building your own. I have seen some that range from 70 to about 300, depending on what it is you want it to do.
There are open source DMX PC control software suites out there, so this can be done somewhat cheaply, if one was so inspired.

Now if there was only a way to set it up to light some e-matches at the end of the "show", you could have a mini-finale...
I know what I'm doing next Christmas! :D

Most use hardware and software from http://www.lightorama.com it is very impressive, I have been wondering if there is a way of converting to use with fireworks. This product allows it to be sync'd with music and controls it all.

Well, my Christmas display will be much much simpler than that. Last year I didn't put anything out as I was still recovering from surgery. This year I am getting somethings out, but not everything I had two years ago.
Well, for now, I still like pushing the buttons on my firing system. I am really not ready to have some computer have all the fun of firing my show. :)
