View Full Version : Fiberglass mortars - 12/05

November 9th, 2005, 12:13 AM
I am pleased to announce that the new shipment of fiberglass mortar tubes has arrived and are now available for sale! Please read the following sections for more information on these tubes and how to order.
Edit (1/06): I have recently switched to a different shipping company, meaning that shipping charges for most midwest and east coast orders have been reduced by 25-35%!
1. SIZE & CONSTRUCTION
These tubes are 15” long and have an internal diameter of 4.8 mm (1.89”) – perfect for all consumer shells. They are made of 2mm thick spiral-wound fiberglass-reinforced epoxy resin, and contain a ~1” thick resin plug.
2. TESTING
I conducted a series of tests with these tubes earlier this year to see how they could stand up to various forms of punishment. Obviously, they had no problems launching shells of all sizes – ball, canister, and multi-break. Okay, but what about the dreaded shell-loaded-upside-down scenario? Well, I inserted a large quad-break shell backwards, lit in, and stood back to watch. The loud explosion threw stars and paper debris high into the air, but when I approached the tube, I found that nothing had happened. I quickly conducted the same test with a ball shell and a canister shell, with the same results – the tube, although hot, had not even warped in the slightest. I then put in the shell the right way, lit it, and watched it perform perfectly, as if nothing had ever even happened to the tube.
These tubes are also incredibly durable. After the shell tests, I took the mortar and threw it as hard as I could against the pavement about half a dozen times, only to have it bounce off unharmed – the resin plug didn’t even crack. Only after beating the heck out of the plug for about a minute with a hammer did I finally get a couple pieces to flake off. I am completely confident that these tubes will work great for launching your shells.
3. ORDERING
To order, go to this page (http://www.pyrouniverse.com/store/quote.htm) and fill out the mortar quote request form. After that I will send you a quote, at which point you can submit payment through Paypal. Please allow a day or so before I respond with your price quote - I don't always get a chance to get on my computer and check my mail.

Good mortar, same with the ones produced in Liuyang. We sell small(2"-6") and big (8",10",12") mortar too. However now seldom people buy big display shells,so our big mortars are difficult to sell.

Are you sure the plugs are clay?
not having seen these personally I would venture a guess that the plugs may be resin with a filler .
If so they would be quite water proof as well as last nearly forever.
Argggggggg sand boxes :( I disassembled 100 of those thursady
currently we are repairing old racks and constructing new ones.
should be recieving 3 containers in two weeks. what fun
Oh well its the pay for the play I guess

Don, you are correct, the ones I have that were from Colin ( I bought them through inouterspace) "LOOK" like clay plugs, kind of a powder grey color, but after closer inspection they are indeed "poured" plugs out of resin.

Completely unnecassary in my opinion...well, at least I didn't with my 200 tubes...as I figured that'd be more work than it was worth.
And besides that, I had nothing go wrong with any of my 200 tubes last year, so I think you are good to go without washing them.

I received twenty yesterday, and I put them into my mortar rack and discovered that they were a lot heavier than I thought, but they are still great tubes.
I can hardlywait to use them on the Fourth.:)

brings up a good point....what is the weight on these baby's. i know that a 15 inch wood plugged HDPE is about a pound, so how much does 100 of the fiberglass ones weigh?
Mike
January 21st, 2006, 11:04 AM
To the contrary, IMO I thought they were quite light. However, the only thing I have to compare them to is the HDPE that comes with Excals. The walls of the fiberglass are much thinner.
EDIT
OK, I just weighed 3 different fiberglass tubes I recently bought with my Rapala digital fish scale. ;)
Put an empty mesh laundry bag on the scales and zeroed out the weight.
They were all 8 ounces each. But I suppose some could weigh more or less depending if the plugs were the exact same thickness, which they probably aren't since they are a poured resin of some kind.
Colin

The manufacturer's specification says that they're 0.75 pounds each, but like Mike said, that probably varies depending on the exact size of the plug, since that's where most of the weight is concentrated.

well %25 lighter is %25 less doans pills.
i'm thinking 100 or so fiberglass tubes will be one of my first purchases once the legal bills are payed.

Colin must be swamped this week. Put in my small request on the 24th, still waiting for the quote. Don't want him to run out before I get mine, with some of you guys ordering 400+ at a time! :)

Yeah, I've been swamped, but not with orders - it turns out my 1-credit organic chemistry lab requires about 7 hours of class/study each week, alone...ack..
There's no shortage of tubes, though. Check your mailbox - you should have a quote now.

I received my order of 120 mortars this past week from Colin. They are considerably lighter and thinner than HDPE. They do have some sharp edges at the top so be careful when handling. I purchased 3 file crates from Staples for < $7 each and voila - three 40 tube rack launchers!! Using HDPE tubes I can only get 30 tubes max into the crates.
Fedex delivered but the sides of the boxes were splitting by the time they arrived. I did use the cardboard from the boxes to shim everything snug. Thanks Colin!

I paid for my tubes Last Thursday night, late, so the earliest Colin could have gotten them out was last Friday. I got them yesterday, so took about a week. Pretty quick since they came from Wa state.

O-chem? I took 221 with the lab, and I remember the lab being killer intense. Fun, but very time-consuming. I'm considering taking an O-chem series next year. What do you think of it? Is it fun and useful? You said 7 Hrs. per week for the lab? What about for the main class?

Here at WWU, the o-chem lecture series is 351, 352, and 353. There are only two quarters of lab (354 and 355) which begin once you're in your second quarter of the lecture.
I love chemistry so I always enjoy the class, but it does move quite fast and covers a lot of material. The first quarter focused mostly on nomenclature and the structures/conformations of organic compounds - particularly cyclohexane rings. This quarter has just been all about reactions. There's no math involved - just learning concepts, such as which type of reaction will occur with given conditions. The class I'm in has three tests throughout the quarter before the final. I just finished the third one, which I probably spent about 16-20 hours studying for just this week. I could have spread it out a little more, but I also had the lab to deal with.
The labs here are a lot of fun, and fairly easy, although quite time consuming. There are two 3-hour lab sections each week, and although most people finish in two, it still seems like a lot longer - especially since mine runs late into the evening, by which time I'm starting to get hungry. It also takes quite a while to read through the techniques and procedures lab textbook, as well as do the pre/post lab reports. But I've gotten a lot out of it, since I learn best by doing.
As for tubes, though....there's still plenty left, and I will post once I'm running low. Again, I know I've been behind on quotes, but most of you should have them by now.

i still perfer hdpe because it doesnt fragment like fiberglass if a strong shell was shot upside-down. we sell both fiberglass and hdpe but we only sell to licensed retailers with tax ID numbers.

Jman,
All my weight test were done with racks, and not tube by themselves. Also the fiberglass tubes were 12" and not 15", but the HDPE are 15".

Colin,
I am interested in buying 100-200 fiberglass tubes, though I want to pick them up instead of having them shipped to me. I don't live too far from you, a couple hours drive and I may end up going up there anyways as we head closer to the 4th of July.
Thanks,
