Looks solid enough...but looks heavy too. Are they back-breakers, or not too bad?

Something about this just doesn't sit well with me. Testing a design under very controlled circumstances is one thing. Turning it into a competition may not be the wisest move.

will gladly engage in a Rack Sturdiness / Blowout Competiton !

Not sure what the contest is. Are you trying to see how many blowouts a rack will withstand? How how many tubes can blow at once and still hold up? I'll gladly send you a rack to test (using your tubes since I have to ship, but I'm sure both our HDPE tubes are up to par), but you better plan on wasting a lot of shells before mine will fail.

I agree with you Stunt. My above post was in jest. Although I'm fairly certain that the racks I build will stay together, all my testing has been done with a single purpose in mind, build the safest rack I possibly could.

GT, don't get me wrong, it was an experience to watch the burst flying between the spaces and out of the rack during my testing, but something like what you're proposing can easily turn into trouble imo. 'Course if you guys decide to do it, stay safe, and maybe we can all learn a little more about rack safety. If I hadn't done testing myself, I would still be building racks in the same manner as I originally did years ago and to say the least, they weren't very safe.

Also, with my statement above about how "if I hadn't done testing myself", I am by no means implying I think everyone should run out and start loading canisters upside down to see if their rack will hold up. If you're wondering about your racks, you can easily read all the great threads here on the forum. Guys have been doing these types of tests for a while now, you can probably draw your own conclusions about rack safety without actually testing them yourselves. Rack testing can be very dangerous if proper precautions aren't taken ahead of time. (distances, safety barriers, e-fire, etc).

well i bet you are right about that stuntborg. . .
listening to the voice of reason is a good thing. thanks for the honest feedback. ;)

i will just test mine with some folks at MPAG "under very controlled circumstances " and post the results.

gt

Smart move GT. I got the idea of what you wanted to do, but I think you will accomplish the same thing with your 'revised' plan.

Yeah and how some other pretty well seasoned pyro missed the mistake and lit it anyway.8o Hey at least I called it when I saw the lift go straight up. Plenty of warning....sort of......:brick::beer:

GT, are those 2x6's or 2x8's for the bottom and sides on the above racks?

really! must have some nice sturdy racks! :brick::brick:
They might hold up better than a MCR. http://www.pyrouniverse.com/forum/showpost.php?p=144081&postcount=1

Lol. It is pretty sturdy, below is the link to what he is referring to. The bottom holder is down on the plug so any explosion should be just the tube and not anything that supports it.

I'm building 5x new 32 shot racks similar to this one, I have most of the parts made I just need to take time and put them together.

i use 2X6 as they provide a solid stableness to the rack. you need to really push on them with some force to tip them when not secured.
i have played around using both standard lumbar and treated pine. I prefer the treated pine as the boards seem more consistently truer. no warp. and give an extra measure of protection. the 2x2 spacers are treated pine also. come in a bundle of 12 at Home Depot.

the racks are heavy but not back breakers. 3" screws to hold the end boards to the bottom. 2 1/2" screws to hold the side rails and 2 1/4" screws for the spacers. i predrill now and get zero splits. all exterior screws course thread with a star bit. i get no stripping of screws. i started drilling holes at the top of all my tubes to be able to route leader fuses or to route and secure ematch. the aluminum foil tape across one side keeps Quick Match or fast fuse from burning the wood or starting them on fire. i have found all those spacers give a very substantial amount of localized rack integrity.

nice design....and great idea with the foil. do you find it easier to fuse with the holes in the mortars. seems like it would be a lot neater.

It's just a basic book, so a smart guy like you will find it basic. However, I'll still send one with your GLASS order.

dont worry cuda-man - they are receiving therapy from Doctor Psquared and dealing with their abandonment issues nicely. a couple of times i have gone out to the ignitor factory i caught them trying to hit on the Patron girl but she is holding out for Cuda she said. so they are recovering nicely.

Somethin' about the Patron chick and can...ughhh...shells in the Igniter Factory that gets me thinkin'.:D
