Hello, I'm after reading this forum (and the old one)for about a year now...I finally registered.
Does anyone know if a fiberglass mortar is as loud on the thump versus a hdpe motar. I was hoping to buy some more 15 inch tubes, but can't decide which one to get.

I dont own any fiberglass, but I would assume they would be very close... I think the thump comes from the diameter. If they are the same size, probably the same sonic signature as well.

Having fired from both types of mortars in a variety of sizes, I don't think the material of the mortar matters. However, I do think it's cool that with the fiberglass mortars you can see the flame of the lift charge, so from now on I'm buying fiberglass.

So you say that the size or material does not matter.
For example If comparing a 10" hdpe mortar and a 15" hdpe motar the sound would be the same. I would think a larger tube would sound louder.
Would it also be safe to shoot a triple break out of a 10" tube?
I guess a fiberglass rack is what i'm going to build!

Yes, I'm saying that based on my own experience.

Absolutely! Snugness of fit is important in performance; length of tube really isn't. The new Decimator 10-break shells from Shogun literally stick out of the top of the tube, by design; Shogun claims that this is an additional safety factor, because you never have to look in a tube to see whether it's loaded. You can see a picture of it in Kellner's full catalog, product 8802A. Shogun also makes the "tubeless" artillery shell that looks like a rocket, but is actually a festival ball that you fire outside the tube, and this works fine; it's Kellner's product 8808.

One of the great advantages of HDPE is the fact that it comes in different diameters, your question of tube length does not affect sound/height near as much as snugness of fit. sdr-11 HDPE is a perfect fit for 99% of consumer cannister shells, and sdr-9 is a perfect fit for 99% of consumer ball shells and multi break shells. With fiberglass you are limited to one inside diameter. The wall thickness of HDPE is also much thicker than fiberglass holding fuse much better when chain fusing through holes in the mortars. A ball or multi break shell fired from a fiberglass tube will not get the thump or height it will from HDPE.:)

Fiberglass mortars are cheaper, lighter, and will fire the shells just fine. If you want the maximum possible performance, go with HTPE, but there isn't a lot of difference. I prefer fiberglass guns for 1.4 and 1.3G shells.

The price difference is pennies, if you buy 50 tubes the cost to purchase difference is about $5.00, so there isn't much difference in cost either. HTH.

thanks for the input,
What is the inside diameter of the fiberglass tube ?

1.98" I think.
Edit: My bad, I double checked...its 1.89"
